It happened again.
After three hours of political circus, the members of the Senate Public Policy committee passed SB 12, the latest version of a never ending cycle of hate crime bills to make its appearance in this year’s legislative session.
But I’m not talking about the bill itself. I’m making reference to the post-vote, bi-partisan celebration featuring back slaps, high-fives and a popular verbal declaration that assures all the responsible parties of the rightness of their actions.
Chairman of the Senate Public Policy committee, Senator Ron Alting, pronounced what has become the official mantra for every politician when he gushed that this piece of legislation will now get Indiana “on the right side of history.”
There it is.
That familiar phrase we hear every time some progressive politician gets a fresh vision for social change. We saw this scenario unfold only weeks ago when the New York legislature enacted one of the most barbaric and savage pieces of legislation allowing abortions up to the very moment of birth.
This legislative “achievement” was wildly celebrated as “progress” with Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) calling it “a bright light forward for the rest of the nation to follow.”
There it is again.
Progress. Moving forward. Grabbing destiny by the throat. Being on the right side of history. After all, that’s really all that matters.
The whole political charade reminds me of my life as a middle-schooler. Being “on the right side of history” is kind of like being invited to sit with the cool kids during the lunch hour.
It’s like peer pressure for political prostitutes.
For the middle school kid, the worst case scenario is to be considered a “nerd” by the ruling class. Being “on the wrong side of history” is the epitome of being a political nerd, a cultural Neanderthal, or even worse, a bigot and a hater. After all, who in their right mind wants to be accused of being on the WRONG side of history! Hope, change, progress…The cultural revolution must continue!
Perhaps it’s time for a wake up call.
Have we forgotten that history is HIS-story? It’s the outworking of God’s revelation and the unfolding of His plan of redemption. History is not a progressive re-writing of God’s revelation, but rather a joyful submission to what God has already revealed to be Truth.
I find it rather ridiculous that much of what we are touting as “progressive” – abortion, homosexuality, pedophilia, bi-sexuality, transgenderism, and a host of other sexual liberties – were already in vogue in the pagan cultures mentioned in the Scriptures. These behaviors were clearly defined by God as sinful and destructive. These pagan people were are on the wrong side of HIS-story. And HIS-story is the only one that matters.
Perhaps this explains the common cry of God’s prophets. Consider the words of Jeremiah:
For they have deserted me and turned to foolish idols. They have turned away from the ancient highways of good and walk the muddy paths of sin. Therefore, their land shall become desolate, so that all who pass by will gasp and shake their heads in amazement at its utter desolation. (Jeremiah 18:15-16 TLB)
From God’s perspective, it’s the ancient highway, and not the modern progressive trails, which lead to life and blessing. We must be more concerned with pleasing the God of history than we are with joining the political opportunists who are hell-bent on worshiping history, especially their own tiny place in it.
Let’s take off our muddy shoes, wash our dirty feet and join our great Creator and King as He writes His beautiful story in the hearts and lives of those He redeems. Being on the right side of HIS-story matters!
